Microsoft Research Cambridge

The Microsoft Research Lab in Cambridge has openings for Optical Researchers with expertise in the following areas: optical communication, optical storage, high-speed optical transmission (short- and long-haul), silicon photonics, photonics fabrication and integration, dynamic optical networks and optical packet and circuit switching. The candidate is expected to have a strong research track record, demonstrated through top-tier publications and research artefacts, and the ability to drive an exciting research agenda.

Researchers will be tasked with inventing and developing optical technologies for the cloud. They have the opportunity to advance the state-of-the-art and to make deep practical impact. This will involve identifying technology trends, scoping out big and open problems, and devising and deploying creative solutions at scale. To achieve this, the researcher will work with a cross-disciplinary team at Microsoft, collaborating across its labs and the company and engaging with partners in industry and academia.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Optics, Electrical Engineering, Physics or related field
  • Desire to impact the real world
  • Track record of conceiving and executing on an innovative research agenda
  • Keen to work in a cross-disciplinary team
  • Experience in optical hardware, optical design and analytical tools
  • Strong communications skills (written and oral)
