The School of Chemistry at the University of Birmingham prides itself in providing a transformational learning experience to our undergraduate students and supporting excellent research. High specification laboratories furnished with state-of-the-art scientific equipment has provided a backdrop against which collaborations between various disciplines has strengthened.

We are seeking to appoint an experienced Technical Manager, responsible for all aspects relating to the performance and management of the School’s technical staff and estate. This will include supporting teaching and research by managing equipment, health and safety, technical staff and infrastructure. The Technical Manager will work with staff and students from within the school and across the College to assist in the development of laboratories and building projects, providing advice and guidance on what can be achieved within the School.

An important aspect of the role will be to provide oversight, advice and guidance on managing and monitoring all issues relating to health and safety within a school containing a wide range of risks and hazards, ensuring compliance with legislation and College/University policy.

Applicants should have:

  • A good honours degree in Chemistry or a related technical area (or have equivalent experience).
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Health and Safety regulations.
  • Experience of managing technical facilities, staff and operations in a complex environment.
  • Experience of working in a Higher Education role.
  • Broad ranging relevant technical expertise, including up to date in-depth knowledge of the School’s specialist areas.
  • Excellent people management skills with a successful track record of leading, managing, adapting and motivating teams in order to meet current and future needs.
