PhD - Residual Stress Analysis using Electromagnetic NDT Sensors caused by Manufacturing Processes in Sheet Steel

This project is a fantastic opportunity for someone to join the Advanced Steels Research Centre, at WMG, University of Warwick. An internationally leading centre for steel research, the ASRC is located in the new Advanced Manufacturing and Materials building and has benefited from over £3 million investment in new equipment.

The steels processing group consists of five academic staff, over ten research fellows, and twenty PhD students working in steel processing, characterisation and applications. You will join an established group with opportunities for collaborative as well as individual research, and benefit from new facilities and a supportive environment. The ASRC has strong links with industry, with many projects being sponsored and opportunities exit for placements within industry.

Project overview
Steel continues to be the most used material in the world by value, and plays an essential role in all aspects of society, from construction to transport, energy generation to food production.

Residual stresses in components play an important role in the fatigue life, yield, and failure stresses, particularly for heavy equipment such as yellow goods (cranes, trucks etc). Methods of measuring residual stresses non-destructively in components are being developed; including electromagnetic and ultrasonic inspection techniques. It is known that stress affects the magnetic permeability of ferromagnetic materials through the principals of magnetostriction and magnetic domain theory. It is therefore possible to deduce applied and residual stresses using sensing equipment that is capable of measuring properties related to changes in magnetic permeability.

This project will investigate the capability of EM sensor systems to measure residual stresses that occur in thick gauge strip steels that are used in the construction, lifting and excavating industries as a result of manufacture or joining processes.

You will join a team of six researchers working on EM sensors and undertake work in the non-destructive testing laboratory within the ASRC. The project is co-funded by EPSRC and Tata Steel UK.

This position provides a tax free stipend for UK National (or EU nationals who have resided in the UK for the past three years) of £14,000 (plus £3,000 industrial top-up) per year, and all fees paid are paid for UK nationals, for up to 4 years.

Applicants should have a 1st or 2:1 degree or equivalent in materials, mechanical or manufacturing engineering, material science, metallurgy, physics or similar disciplines.
