Postdoctoral Research Assistant - Ecological Modelling

University of Reading - Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

The University of Reading’s School of Biological Sciences and School of Agriculture, Policy and Development are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Assistant to assist in modelling the occurrence of pollinator populations and pollination services across the UK.

Pollination services by bees and hoverflies provide millions of pounds in enhanced crop production across the UK each year. However, to date, models for projecting the populations of pollinators and the pollination services they provide are limited and lack temporal sensitivity. This position, funded as part of a wider BBSRC funded project “Modelling Landscapes for Resilient Pollination Services in the UK”, will develop statistical modelling approaches to quantify changes in pollinator populations over time and integrate these with spatially explicit models of pollination service delivery. The outputs will form the basis of comprehensive maps of pollinator populations and pollination services across the UK and will provide the successful applicant with numerous opportunities to publish and present their research.

This position is full time, 2 year fixed term appointment with an intended start date of January 2018. The successful applicant will be primarily based at the School of Biological Sciences but will also work closely with colleagues in the School of Agriculture, Policy and Development.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Significant experience working with quantitative ecological modelling
  • A PhD in ecology, biology, statistics or a related discipline
  • Experience working with R or other statistical packages
  • Experience working with GIS
  • Strong communication and time-keeping skills.
