Reward Specialist

We are seeking a Reward Specialist to join our Reward Team at the University of Sussex. Reporting to the Reward Manager, the Reward Specialist is a key member of the team and provides important strategic analysis, support, and interface between the reward function, our internal clients, and third party vendors.

The Reward Specialist is responsible for coordinating and supporting various University benefits plans, salary benchmarking efforts, and performance and compensation programmes under the guidance of the Reward Manager and supported by the rest of the Reward team.

This role requires a subject matter specialist who is a dedicated team player and provides a high level of exceptional client service delivered with a combination of operational know-how and strategic awareness. A demonstrated ability to deal with confidential information is also essential.

Core responsibilities will be:

  • Supports the Reward Manager and team by coordinating key reward activities and processes.
  • Supports the annual and cyclical performance and compensation review processes for the University.
  • Benchmarking roles and producing data for benchmarking surveys during the relevant times in the year.
  • Analyses market data for individuals and groups with consideration of risk and control matters.
  • Carries out analysis to support the design of new remuneration strategies and practices, in particular to support the development of University pay ranges.
  • Makes sound recommendations for adjustments to market positioning and career levels based on market data.
  • Supports individual reward matters unique to employees, such as new hire remuneration, severances, developing tailored packages, and support on any mobility arrangements.
  • Coordinates the University's Gender Pay Gap reporting requirements.
  • Assists in the administration of annual pay equity efforts.
  • Coordinates reporting efforts to provide strategic management information on reward schemes.
  • Works with the HRIS team members to improve the quality of HR data in the HRIS system.

This is a fantastic opportunity for either a current Reward or Compensation Specialist or a Reward or Compensation Coordinator to step up into a Specialist role and support the University’s Reward Strategy. Ideally, you will have previously worked within a central HR team and in a similar role and have the following knowledge, experience and skills:

  • Broad knowledge of total rewards/compensation principles and best practices.
  • Knowledge and direct experience of reward and salary benchmarking, eg. Mercer, AON, Towers Perrin, UCEA surveys, etc.
  • General knowledge of UK compliance legislation and business accounting practices related to HR including taxable benefits considerations etc.
  • Strong knowledge of HR best-practices, processes, and terminology.
  • Knowledge of and experience with in HRIS systems reporting and exporting to Excel.
  • Advanced MS Excel skills are essential (automating tasks with macros, advanced formulas, pivot tables and charts, tables with conditional formatting, V-Lookup, etc.) with intermediate MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and Adobe forms skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities combined with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Superior ability to work collaboratively and cross-functionally within matrix reporting relationships.
  • Strong and proven organisational and time management skills.
