The Centre for Higher Education Practice (CHEP) is a new Centre, which provides support for academic and research staff at the University of Southampton. As part of the University’s ambitious 10-year plan, the Centre aims to provide comprehensive world-leading professional development for those at all stages of academic career development across the life course, from PGR students through ECRs to Lecturers, Associate Professors and Professors.

The Centre has an opening for a Director to develop and implement a vision and strategy to embed and further develop CHEP, focussing on establishing a University-wide, distributed model of outstanding academic and researcher development.  This is an exciting opportunity for an exceptional individual to lead a team in establishing CHEP as a leading hub for the development and dissemination of outstanding practice here at Southampton and beyond.

Through this role, you will enable CHEP to establish a national and international reputation for academic and researcher development, develop new educational development insights in the University, and play a leading role in the debate nationally about teaching and learning policy. You will lead a nationally and internationally significant research programme focussing on academic and researcher development and lead on securing major research grants and contracts.  Through entrepreneurship, you will develop and lead an enterprise strategy to enable national and international delivery of academic and researcher development programmes through a significant range of activities

The appointment is a permanent post commencing on 29 January 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

You will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in education or related area, together with a PGCE, QTS, PGCAP, Fellowship or Senior/Principal Fellowship of the HEA.  You will have a significant national and international reputation in academic and researcher development and recent and substantial experience of managing academic and researcher development in the higher education sector.  You will be able to establish credibility with a wide range of academics from different disciplinary backgrounds and build major relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

As a Professor, you will have a proven ability to develop and lead an internationally leading programme of research, leading to publications in top international journals. You will be able to demonstrate the capacity to implement successful change management initiatives and formulate strategic

plans that reflect and support the priority needs of the University, together with evidence of developing significant new concepts and original ideas in response to the changing external environment for HE.

We particularly welcome applicants with strong strategic skills.  Experience in delivering successful enterprise programmes would be advantageous.
