Research Associate (3 posts)

Imperial College London - Section of Virology, Division of Infectious Diseases, Faculty of Medicine

We are looking for three talented and highly motivated postdoctoral scientists to join Professor Wendy Barclay’s influenza research group at Imperial College London. The positions are funded by a Wellcome Trust Investigator Award to Professor Barclay. Following on from our discovery of ANP32A as a key factor in determining host restriction of the avian influenza polymerase (Long et al., 2016, Nature, 529: 101-4), the aim is to understand the adaptation of the influenza polymerase during pandemic emergence from avian hosts and its subsequent circulation as seasonal influenza in humans. Ultimately, this work will identify novel drug targets, assist pandemic preparedness and elucidate the mechanisms through which some influenza viruses cause severe outcomes.

The research will take a number of different approaches and will combine the experience of postdoctoral scientists from different backgrounds.

We aim to employ biochemical, virological, immunological, imaging and sequencing approaches including novel methods for labelling and visualizing virus components and interacting factors, proteomics and CRISPR technology.

It is envisioned that each postdoctoral scientist will work primarily on one strand of the project and also collaborate within the group.

You must have a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant field such as virology, immunology, molecular biology, evolutionary biology, biochemistry or another related biological field, and an excellent record of prior research and publication in a related area. Practical experience within a laboratory environment is essential.

The posts are available immediately and are full time for up to five years. For details about these positions, please contact Brett Onslow (
