Research Associate in Semiconductor Quantum Dot Infrared Lasers

Lancaster University - Physics

Contract type: Fixed-term/contract (10 months)

Lancaster University is seeking a highly motivated researcher to work on a project of developing III-V quantum dot mid-wavelength infrared lasers. The project is funded by the Innovate UK in collaboration with Cascade Technologies. The project aims to develop an advanced antimonide quantum structures to demonstrate room temperature lasers operating in mid-wavelength infrared spectral range. The project requires expertise in the growth of III-V semiconductor quantum dots by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), laser device processing and characterisation.

You should hold, or shortly expect to obtain, a PhD in Physics, Electronic Engineering or a related discipline. Experience is required in MBE growth, semiconductor characterisation and device fabrication in a cleanroom environment.

You will be fully integrated into the Quantum Technology Centre (QTC) at Lancaster University where you will conduct MBE growth, device fabrication and optical spectroscopies. You will conduct research both independently and in collaboration with other members in the centre. The project is initially funded for 10 months with possible extension subject to the further funding.

Please contact Dr Qiandong Zhuang if you wish to have an informal discussion about this opportunity: Email: Tel: +44 1524 594198.

Lancaster’s QTC opened in 2014 and is embedded with the Department of Physics, which was ranked first and equal-first respectively in the 2008 and 2001 UK Research Assessment Exercises (RAE). In 2014 it was ranked second for its world-leading research publications in the UK Research Excellence Framework (REF). It is seeking to further enhance its scientific standing.

Lancaster University Physics Department is strongly committed to fostering diversity within its community as a source of excellence, cultural enrichment, and social strength. We welcome those who would contribute to the further diversification of our department.

We welcome applications from people in all diversity groups.
