Salary: £32, 548 – £35,550 pa with the potential to progress to £38,833 pa by annual increments on achieving designated skills and experience

FTE: Full time, working 37 hours per week (1.0 fte)

Duration of Contract: 1 Year FTC

We are currently looking for a Junior Systems Administrator to work alongside our existing System Administrators

As a member of the Infrastructure Development Team, you will mainly be involved in project work related to delivering the next generation of Infrastructure for the University and offering your experience and recommendations to improve the technologies that are currently in use now and in the future. You will also be expected to contribute to maintaining the day to day running of the University infrastructure and services. 

You will contribute to the strategic design, development and day to day management of the University Physical and Virtual Server and Storage infrastructure including Windows and Linux Server Infrastructure, HP Storage, Commvault Backup and Data centre's

The University has a large VMware VSphere Implementation and one of the main parts of the role will be to manage and maintain the current estate of 500 Windows/Linux servers both Virtual and physical.

Experience of working within a Virtual server environment is essential any experience of working with enterprise level server, storage hardware & backup solutions will be of benefit as will experience of working with or migrating services to cloud infrastructures.

As part of this role you will need to demonstrate the following knowledge:


  • Significant, demonstrable experience of systems administration
  • Demonstrable experience of managing Windows / Linux servers
  • Demonstrable experience of VMware administration and management
  • Knowledge of Cloud Technologies (AWS or Azure)
  • Demonstrable experience of Microsoft Active Directory and group policies
  • Demonstrable understanding of enterprise level server and storage hardware
  • Clear thinking with an analytical and methodological approach to problem solving
  • Ability to work to a plan
  • Good communications (oral and written), interpersonal, persuasion and negotiating skills


  • Demonstrable knowledge of Microsoft Exchange, email threat management and spam mitigation
  • Scripting skills: PowerShell, VBS, Perl, Python
  • Fibre Channel Switching / Fabric management
  • Disaster Recovery tools and processes (SCCM)
  • Knowledge of ITIL

The Person

  • You will bring to the role extensive, relevant knowledge and experience of IT best practice including:
  • Experience of working within a complex and diverse infrastructure environment with appreciation and knowledge of legacy and new technologies
  • Extensive Knowledge of Linux or other UNIX based operating systems
  • Strong technical background of Physical and Virtual Service administration including Windows 2012 and VMware ESX technologies and Microsoft System Centre
  • Knowledge of core technologies such as; CIFS/Samba, VMware ESX, Windows Server 2012R2, LDAP, Active Directory
  • Knowledge of storage technologies including, SAN, Fibre Channel, iSCSI
  • Knowledge of IT backup standards, policies and procedures with experience of implementing these within a large user environment


  • Graduate or equivalent expertise and experience
  • Qualification in computing at professional level or equivalent expertise and experience
