Lecturer in Theory of Architecture

As a field of teaching and research, the theory of architecture is a combination of the principles of architecture and architectural history. Its main areas of interest include architectural history, design theories and methods, architectural research, philosophy of architecture, architecture criticism, and architectural communication. Closely linked to many other research fields such as the theory of art and culture, art history, cultural and social policy, history of technology, and philosophy, the theory of architecture underlies a wide range of cultural, historical and national phenomena in architecture.

Depending on the qualifications of the candidate, the appointment will be made at the level of university lecturer or senior university lecturer in the Aalto University lecturer career system. The post is available on a fixed-term contract basis for five years as of 1 January 2018.

Job description
The lecturer in theory of architecture will focus on the principles and theory of architecture, and is responsible for teaching theory of architecture and architectural writing to the Bachelor, Master’s and Doctoral students of the Department of Architecture.

The responsibilities will also include teaching the principles of architectural research, supervising Master’s and Doctoral students, and guiding students in academic and journalistic writing. In addition, the lecturer in theory of architecture will be involved in developing the teaching, research, and doctoral education of architecture, and will be expected to keep up to date with developments in architectural teaching and research as well as publications and exhibitions, both in Finland and abroad.

Requirements
The successful candidate will have a Doctoral degree in a relevant field, experience in teaching at university level and diverse professional experience in the field of architecture. Preference will be given to candidates who have undergone pedagogical training. The successful candidate will have in-depth knowledge of architecture and architectural research in Finland and in the other Nordic countries.  A good command of oral and written English is required for supervising and guiding students in their writing and for developing the teaching and research of the department, while knowledge of Finnish and Swedish would be desirable. 

Salary and working time
Salary will be determined upon competence and experience of the chosen person following the salary system of Finnish universities. Teaching personnel belong to the total working hours system, working 1624 hours annually. Part-time work can be negotiated with the selected person.
