Temporary Lecturer in Statistics - AC2047HM

University of St Andrews - School of Mathematics and Statistics

Start Date: Subject to negotiation, Fixed Term for: 3 years.

This is a 3-year fixed-term post. We are looking for an outstanding teacher and researcher in Statistics to cover a 3-year secondment out of the School of Mathematics and Statistics of a Senior Lecturer in Statistics.

We welcome applications from outstanding researchers in any area of Statistics, including research areas that could link with, or build on existing strengths at St Andrews, including those of the seconded staff member, Dr Monique MacKenzie. Our primary strength in Statistics has been in Statistical Ecology, centred on the world-leading Centre for Research into Ecological and Environmental Modelling (CREEM).  Most CREEM staff are statisticians in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, but there are also strong links with the School of Biology and links with the School of Medicine. We have recently appointed a new professor of Statistics in Bioscience, jointly with the School of Medicine. We also have world-leading expertise in Experimental Design. We have growing links with the School of Computer Science in Data Science research, which we are keen to build on, and with the School of Geography and Sustainable Development. There are also opportunities for collaboration with our School’s Pure and Applied Mathematics groups.

We have strong and growing Masters programmes in Statistics, with our successful MSc in Applied Statistics and Data Mining (approx. 20 students per year) now in its tenth year, a new Masters programme in Data Science jointly with the School of Computer Science, and we are also offering a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Statistics and Data Mining. We plan to launch an MSc in Ecological Statistics from 2018/19, and are contributing to an interdisciplinary MSc in Conservation Science and an MSc in Digital Health from the same year.

For informal enquiries, we encourage those considering applying to contact the Head of School, Professor Thomas Neukirch (mathshos@st-andrews.ac.uk), the Deputy Head of School, Professor Ineke De Moortel (idm2@st-andrews.ac.uk) and/or Head of Statistics, Professor David Borchers (dlb@st-andrews.ac.uk) to discuss possibilities.

Applications are particularly welcome from women who are under-represented in Science posts at the University. You can find out more about Equality and Diversity at http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/hr/edi/.

The University is committed to equality for all, demonstrated through our working on diversity awards (ECU Athena SWAN/Race Charters; Carer Positive; LGBT Charter; and Stonewall).  More details can be found at http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/hr/edi/diversityawards/.
