Lecturer in Illustration: Interactive Narrative

BA(Hons) Illustration is a vibrant programme of study in School of Art, Design and Architecture. Students from the course regularly win top awards and competitions, and gain employment in illustration, design and publishing regionally, nationally and internationally. The programme includes connected award pathways – Animation & the Screen, Children’s Markets, Comics & Visual Narratives and Printmaking.

We are looking for a narrative driven, games developer and/or interactive or creative coder with good scripting and programming skills in one or more of the following languages – ActionScript, C#, Java, JavaScript, C++, GML. We are also looking for experience in one or more of the following development environments or frameworks – Adobe Animate CC, Unity, Processing, OpenFrameworks, GameMaker in order to provide teaching and project support to Illustration students in relation to:

  • the process of creating graphical assets such as 2D sprites and 3D models (meshes and textures)
  • developing point-and-click/tap style stories or adventure games with interactive scripting and animation
  • procedurally combining simple elements in many permutations and the principles of generative art
  • sculptural or interactive hardware projects involving projection, sensors, leds, conductive paint, etc.
  • novel and creative applications of VR, AR and mobile/tablet/e-ink technology

You will hold a PhD (or be near to completion) in a relevant discipline and be able to demonstrate an established research track record and evolving profile appropriate to the role. Experience in supervising masters/doctoral students is desirable. We will also consider applicants with extensive practical or industrial experience in relevant areas.

Working closely with the programme leader, you will undertake curriculum development and course management as required. Key aspects of the role include delivery of teaching/lectures, supervision of practical and theoretical study, personal tutoring, assessment and feedback, maintaining quality of delivery as well as helping with the organisation of educational field trips/visits, visiting lectures, career spines, student work placements and end of year shows.
