Senior Teaching Fellow (Strategic Lead)

Imperial College London - Department of Mechanical Engineering

Fixed Term for 4 years

The Mechanical Engineering Department wishes to appoint two Senior Teaching Fellows to contribute to its teaching and to a programme of development of its taught undergraduate courses. The undergraduate teaching subjects will be in two areas (one post for each): Thermo-Fluids (thermo-dynamics and fluid mechanics); and Solid Mechanics. The programme of development is a major curriculum review of the undergraduate course which is already under way; the new posts will pursue the enhancement of teaching by improved methods, particularly involving e-learning, the creation of new teaching materials, and participation in the roll-out of these across course modules.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering has an outstanding international reputation for both its research and its teaching.  Its undergraduate MEng degree course is a four-year programme, with an intake of 160 students per year; the course is delivered by about 50 teaching staff. The course comprises two years of core subjects, covering the full range of interests for Mechanical Engineering, compulsory for all students; in years 3 and 4 the students then have significant choice and are able to specialise according to their interests. The variety is enabled and strengthened by the world-leading research of the department.

Applicants should have a degree (or equivalent) in Engineering, Mathematics, or an Applied Science, and ability to teach either Thermo-Fluids or Solid Mechanics subjects. They must have experience of advanced modern methods of teaching, including e-learning. They must be an excellent communicator and have a proven ability to initiate and lead teaching activities and work within a team.

These posts are for the teaching programme only, they do not offer the possibility to pursue engineering research. These posts are funded for a period of four years.
