Post Doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 (PD1)

Research Area: Crops, Environment and Land Use Programme

Eligibility: PhD in a relevant discipline with up to 3 years’ (max.) relevant experience. 

The combined total of this contract combined with any other PD1 contracts must not exceed 3 years in total.

Post Duration: The indicative duration of 12 months, but not exceeding the above project end date, subject to contract

Location: Teagasc, Johnstown Castle Research Centre, Wexford, Ireland

Training Rate: Appointment will be at the minimum point of the Post Doctoral Level 1 (PD1) scale (€34,975).

The current PD1 scale is as follows: PD1: €34,975 (min.); €35,974; €37,003 (max.)

Increments will be awarded annually* subject to performance and completion of the prescribed training plan.

Basic Function of the post: Investigate the state-of-art diffuse contaminant models for Irish conditions.

Background

The EPA-funded DiffuseTools Project is developing catchment models and tools that can be used by stakeholders to inform catchment management and water management policy, by building on previous Irish and international research. The project will identify or develop diffuse pollution models to improve understanding of how to manage catchments and enhance the evaluation of water quality that are most applicable to Irish conditions and management challenges. Feedback from stakeholders on the management challenges that are that are most pertinent in Irish catchments will direct this research. This project aims to inform catchment managers about potential sources of pollution within a catchment, including identifying critical source areas relating to sediment, phosphorus, and pesticides.

Person Specification

Essential

  • v PhD in environmental science/hydrochemistry/hydrology/engineering (or equivalent)
  • v Good computational skills

Desirable

  • Experience in  developing and advancing water quality models and decision support tools to simulate the impacts of land use, climate, and human influences on water quality
  • Ability to programme in R, Python, or similar
