Research Area: Dairy/Food Science & Technology

Eligibility: PhD in a relevant discipline with up to 3 years’ (max.) relevant experience. 

The combined total of this contract combined with any other PD1 contracts must not exceed 3 years in total.

Post Duration: The indicative duration of 24 months, but not exceeding the above project end date, subject to contract.

Location: Teagasc Food Research Centre Moorepark, Fermoy, Co. Cork

Training Rate: Appointment will be at the minimum point of the Post Doctoral Level 1 (PD1) scale (€34,975).

The current PD1 scale is as follows: PD1: €34,975 (min.); €35,974; €37,003 (max.)

Increments will be awarded annually* subject to performance and completion of the prescribed training plan.

Note: Exceptional circumstances may apply for candidates with current or previous service in the public sector. *Remuneration and the annual cycle for the payment of increments may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government policy.

Basic Function of the post:

This post doctoral scientist will have a PhD in Food Science, Process Engineering, BioSciences or a related discipline.The appointee will be involved in building and supporting the membrane fractionation platform within the Dairy Processing Technology Centre and will work strategically with Teagasc researchers, industry  and academic partners.

Background

The Teagasc post-doctoral programme provides training and development opportunities for early career scientists that enhances their experience of learning and equips them with the necessary skills for the next stage of their chosen career in research. This project will be carried out as part of a state funded Dairy Processing Technology Centre (DPTC) in collaboration with industry.  The Dairy Processing Technology Centre (DPTC) is Ireland’s centre of excellence for dairy processing research and innovation, established to help to fuel growth in the Irish dairy sector by performing research focused on cost-efficient processing; facilitating a step-change in environmental sustainability; and creating, validating and commercialising a pipeline of science and technology-based manufacturing platforms for dairy ingredients. The DPTC is a strong, long-term industry-academic collaborative partnership that will develop, build and translate the knowledge and capabilities in dairy processing that are needed today and for the long-term growth of the sector. Current industry members of the Centre are Arrabawn Co-op, Aurivo Co-op, Carbery Group, Dairygold Co-op, Glanbia Ingredients Ireland, Kerry Group, Lakeland Dairies and Tipperary Co-op.

Person Specification

Essential

  • PhD in Food Science, Food Technology, Food Process Engineering, Food BioSciences or a related discipline
  • Relevant research experience not to exceed 3 years’ post-PhD

Desirable

  • Strong knowledge of protein fractionation technologies (Dairy, Vegetable or Marine) with particular emphasis on selective enrichment of targeted
  • Experience in standard Dairy Process Technologies
