Graduate Scholarship in Psychiatry to start in October 2018                                               

A 3-year DPhil studentship is available starting in October 2018 to carry out a project within the remit of the BRC themes of adult mental health;

led by Professor Paul Harrison)

or therapeutics

 led by Professor Catherine Harmer. 

Exemplar projects include:

  • The use of digital devices and remote sensors to monitor and characterise bipolar disorder
  • The effects of novel mood disorder treatments on brain and behaviour
  • The use of magnetoencephalography in evaluating the effects of psychotropic drugs
  • Mining electronic health records to investigate psychiatric disorders
  • Calcium channels: their role in the genomic pathophysiology and treatment of psychiatric disorders.

The student will be co-supervised by two senior researchers in the Department, depending on the project concerned and the methods to be used. 

All applicants should have, or expect to gain, at least an upper second class honors degree. Candidates with, or who are undertaking, an MSc are welcomed. Priority will be given to candidates with a strong background in one or more of the following: human neuroscience, molecular biology, or psychopharmacology. Evidence of mathematical, statistical, or computing expertise desirable. 

The current DPhil studentship stipend (tax-free) is £14,553 per annum, plus support for conference attendance and consumables. Applicants should apply through the formal University procedure and nominate Wolfson as their preferred college.

The scholarship is funded 50% by the Oxford-Wolfson-Marriott Scholarship fund, and 50% by the Oxford Health NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) and administered through the University Department of Psychiatry.
