Job Description
We are seeking an experienced, motivated and capable Scientific Curator to join the HGNC (HUGO Gene Nomenclature Committee) at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located at the prestigious Wellcome Trust Genome Campus in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire in the UK. EMBL-EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and is a leading provider of cutting-edge research, service and training in the field of Bioinformatics.

The HGNC is the only worldwide authority assigning standardised human gene symbols and names, and has three key goals:

  • providing unique standardised nomenclature for every human gene;
  • ensuring this information is freely available, widely disseminated and universally used; and
  • ensuring this nomenclature is expanded and utilised across vertebrate genomes.

We are looking to recruit a new Nomenclature Advisor who will particularly focus on our new work as the Vertebrate Gene Nomenclature Committee (VGNC), assigning gene symbols and names to genes in key vertebrate species Your main tasks will be:

  • bioinformatic analysis of nucleotide and protein sequences
  • curation of online resources, in particular the HGNC and VGNC databases, and
  • communication with researchers, other nomenclature groups, journals and databases.

We are located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK, and our 600 staff are engineers, technicians, scientists and other professionals from all over the world

Qualifications and Experience
You will have a proven track record in biocuration, database and webpage editing, and be educated to PhD level (or equivalent) in a biological science, preferably with a strong background in genetics, phylogenetics, biochemistry or molecular biology.

You will also enjoy working in a team environment, ideally with experience of collaborating with external groups, and will possess excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills. A strong command of the English language is essential. This role will involve international travel.

Benefits
EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation.
