Research Assistant

A Research Assistant post is available, initially for a period of 6 months, to support the completion of the BIOmarker in DEPression (BIODEP) clinical study. The post holder will be responsible for recruiting new study participants and managing their assessments during the study.

Specific tasks will be:

  • Responding to enquiries from potential participants
  • Pre-screening potential participants by phone and arranging screening visits
  • Obtaining informed consent and conducting the screening interview, including the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM (SCID), the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAM-D) and the Antidepressant Treatment Response Questionnaire (ATRQ)
  • Venepuncture and blood-spinning by centrifuge
  • Arranging and attending MRI scans, PET scans and lumbar puncture procedures
  • Being the primary point of contact for study participants
  • Completion of study forms and prompt data entry to the online database

Experience of the above procedures would be an advantage, but the post-holder will be joining an experienced team and full training will be given.

The research assistant will work both independently and closely with other members of the research team and other professionals. They will ensure that recruitment and data ascertainment from participants is carried out to a high standard using proficient communication skills. 

Work will be primarily based in Cambridge; however, this post does require flexible travel to other areas outside of Cambridge (such as London) for possible off-site participant assessments. It is essential that the post holder is flexible and willing to work out-of-hours if required. Some MRI scanning slots are out-of-hours and calling participants out-of-hours is also common and necessary to work around their schedules as best as possible.

Applicants should possess a degree (or equivalent) in biological, physical, psychosocial or other relevant scientific discipline, have an interest in mental health research and be willing to travel and work occasionally outside of normal working hours when visiting potential research participants.
