The appointment

The Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences based within the College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham seeks to appoint an academic cardiologist with appropriate academic stature and profile of a Chair. The appointee will hold an honorary consultant contract with Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals (SWBH) NHS Foundation Trust where the clinical role will be based.

The appointee will promote cardiovascular medicine as an academic discipline in the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, and form an important link with the partner Trust. The Institute has world-wide recognition for its work in thrombo-inflammation and atrial fibrillation. Laboratory-based research centres on thrombosis, inflammation and vascular biology, and mechanisms underlying cardiomyopathies and cardiac arrhythmias. The department of cardiology at SWBH NHS trust has a long-standing track record of supporting translational and clinical epidemiological research into cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular pathophysiology, as well as an active clinical trials programme.

The post would suit a clinician with an active research programme and track record in cardiovascular themes linked to the above. An academic interest in keeping with our developing interests in translational medicine, focussing on thrombotic and heart diseases is desirable. This post offers an excellent opportunity for an outstanding individual to further develop a national and international research portfolio in cardiovascular research in an environment conducive to clinical and translational research.
