Senior Research Laboratory Technician

Applications are invited for the position of Laboratory Technician in the research group of Dr Sebastian Schornack at the Sainsbury Laboratory, Cambridge University (www.schornacklab.net).

The group studies processes of plants which permit colonization by filamentous pathogens and symbiotic fungi. The work is based on genetic, molecular biological, cell biological and developmental approaches.

The post holder will be involved in the research for a specific project involving the transformation and maintenance of sterile Marchantia polymorpha and other liverwort plants (see this link for a recent publication on the topic: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/early/2017/09/14/188912). Specialized method knowledge and a good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel are therefore essential.

The candidate is required to have demonstrated success in carrying out the following methods:

Sterile (plant) tissue culture work, nucleic acid extraction, miniprep from E. coli, bacterial transformation by electroporation or chemical transformation, restriction enzyme digest and quantitative PCR. Experience in working with plant associated (filamentous) microbes and infection assays would be beneficial. Experience in fluorescence microscopy is also desirable.

Candidates must have an educational minimum at the HNC level, or equivalent demonstrated experience in at least one area of core importance to the research group, such as plant development, plant microbe-interactions, plant genetics or biological imaging, arising from either work experience in a high level research environment or a period of undergraduate training. A degree at any level in biology is highly desirable.

The successful applicant will be a strong team player, highly solution-oriented, and self-motivated. Excellent interpersonal skills are essential, alongside the ability to work with a high degree of accuracy, including outstanding record keeping. Candidates must have good IT literacy, a willingness and ability to learn new methodologies and strong communication skills, including demonstrable ability to write clearly and concisely in English.
