Research Consultant – Public Health Modelling

Amongst other research work, York Health Economics Consortium (YHEC) is the Economic and Methodological Unit (EMU) for the NICE Public Health and Social Care Centre, in collaboration with the Centre for Health Economics (University of York).  We are looking to recruit a Research Consultant to undertake a range of economic modelling projects in public health.  The post holder will work on our EMU programme and on a range of projects with NHS organisations and national bodies such as Public Health England.  YHEC is a health economics contract research and consulting company owned by, and based at, the University of York.  We provide consultancy and research to a wide range of public and private sector bodies. 

The primary purpose of the role is to develop and critique economic models on a wide range of projects.  The candidate will be expected to work in project teams alongside other research staff and project directors.  This post will report to the Associate Director of YHEC.

The main responsibilities of a Research Consultant are:

  • After an initial training and development period, lead the development of economic modelling projects and take responsibility for specific elements within larger projects;
  • Critique economic analyses, and report directly to clients on the strengths and weaknesses of alternative approaches;
  • To provide technical advice, validate, document maintain and to supervise the development of models;
  • Identify and retrieve relevant quantitative data from publications and other sources;
  • Undertake statistical analysis for model inputs and stochastic modelling;
  • Collect, analyse and interpret data;
  • To carry out quality assurance review of models developed within the company;
  • Attend and present at meetings with clients, clients’ staff and NHS staff, including NICE Committee meetings;
  • Undertake telephone meetings with clients and key stakeholders;
  • Client liaison within a project, with the support and guidance of senior colleagues;
  • Report preparation and presentation to clients;
  • Keep up-to-date on developments and policy changes within the NHS, health economics and health policy;
  • Contribute to sales and marketing activities within the company;
  • Occasionally provide supervision of other staff working on the project team.

The basic salary will be in the range £25,000 to £38,000 subject to qualifications and experience.  There is a performance-related pay scheme in operation at YHEC.  The post holder will be eligible to join the YHEC Group pension scheme.  Annual leave entitlement will be 30 days per year, plus bank holidays.
