Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position on millimeter wave communications for gigabit per second wireless links, with special focus on studying the interaction between millimeter wave transmission and massive MIMO design in 5G heterogeneous applications. The proposed research has roots in diverse disciplines, including communication and radio engineering, information theory, large system analysis, stochastic geometry, signal processing, and optimization. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with industrial research partners with the aim of integrating various research work packages.

The combination of millimeter wave communications, large-scale antenna arrays, and small cell geometries is a symbiotic convergence of technologies that has the potential to drastically improve access, backhaul, coverage, and capacity. The research developed in this project will address practical issues that incorporate these technologies, concerning transceiver and antenna design, propagation and channel characterization, and interference and impairment modelling for MIMO V- and E‐band systems. Applications include scalable mobile backhauls, dense small cells, and access to the cloud. The successful candidate will have the flexibility to choose a topic within the range of the project, according to his/her experience and preference.

Applicants must have a PhD (or about to obtain a doctoral degree soon) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or in a relevant field and research experience in communications, antennas, and/or signal processing. Familiarity with millimeter wave communications, massive MIMO, and heterogeneous and small cell networks would be an advantage. Candidates should have a strong publication record with extensive experience in publishing research findings in international journals and conference proceedings. Good programming skills and experience in Matlab programming is essential.

This is an EPSRC funded project entitled “Enabling High‐Speed Microwave and Millimeter Wave Links”.

This is a full time post for 21 months (possible 3 month extension subject to funding) starting 1 December 2017 or as soon as feasible after this date. The starting salary will be in the range of £32,956 - £36,677 per annum inclusive of London allowance. Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
