Electron Microscopy Scientist

Diamond Light Source - Physical Science

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s National Synchrotron Science facility and has integrated in its portfolio two centres dedicated to Electron microscopy: eBIC (electron Bio-imaging Centre) and ePSIC (electron Physical Sciences Imaging Centre). Diamond is located on the Harwell Science & Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire, a 20 minute drive south of Oxford in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Diamond Light Source conducts world-class research in virtually all fields of science and offers rewarding career opportunities covering both technical and scientific disciplines. ePSIC enables UK and international scientists to access state-of-the-art electron microscopy techniques by providing access to two aberration corrected JEOL microscopes, JEM ARM 200 and JEM GRAND ARM 300. Those are located in an ultra-stable environment that allows them to work and reach imaging capabilities at the atomic and subatomic level. (For more information about the microscopes please visit the web pages.)

We have a vacancy for an Electron Microscopy Scientist working at ePSIC. With the creation of a Physical Sciences Imaging and Microscopy group at Diamond, this is an opportunity to join and contribute to a multi-disciplinary team of experts in Electron microscopy and Synchrotron radiation techniques. Diamond, operating the electron microscopes as a user facility, aims to build a team of expert microscopists with an in-depth experience of running aberration corrected EMs and detailed understanding of atomic scale imaging methods, including the application of EDX, EELS, and electron diffraction. As “beamline scientist” for the electron microscopes, the primary role for the successful candidate will be to support the day-to-day operation of the ePSIC instruments, and provide technical, scientific, and data analysis expertise for the external users, as part of a collaborative research program. We will also encourage the successful candidate to develop a strong personal research program in chemistry, physics, materials science, or engineering, and seek to enhance the scientific collaborations within the Imaging and Microscopy group as well as other Diamond groups. Under the direction of the Science and Operation directors of ePSIC, you will contribute to building a national and international community of Users and develop ePSIC as a centre of excellence in electron microscopy in the UK.
