We are one of the world’s leading research centres for the study of prions and their wider relevance to neurodegenerative disease with a growing research activity in Alzheimer’s disease ( The Unit is highly multidisciplinary with close integration of structural and molecular biology, genetics, cellular and animal models, small molecule and immuno-therapeutics and clinical research. MRC and UCL are jointly investing £30 million in provision of a dedicated new building in central London for the Institute in late 2017 supporting the vision to expand research in protein misfolding and aggregation in neurodegenerative disease.

We are seeking to recruit an Institute Administrator at UCL Grade 8 (£43,023 to £ 50,753 (including London allowance). The post-holder will be part of the Management Team and will be responsible for the organisation and management of the Institutes administrative affairs and oversee the full range of administrative support to senior staff in the areas of Finance, Human Resources, Research Administration, and Teaching. The research conducted in the Institute enjoys a high public profile and is, in many instances, highly confidential, so tact and discretion are essential. Duties will be broadly based, so the post-holder will need to adopt a flexible approach, be prepared to use his/her initiative, and be able to work under pressure with the minimum of supervision.  

The Institute Administrator will work closely with all administrative and lab managerial and technical staff, working through the Institute’s Business Director.  This will require the post-holder with the Business Director to plan and manage the operational processes including business planning and implementation of robust financial sustainability models, operational quality and performance. The post-holder will take lead responsibility for the day-to-day financial and administrative management of the Institute including its staffing, grant applications, compliance with relevant regulatory requirements and UCL policy and procedure. The Administrator is a key post, critical to delivering operational efficiency, financial sustainability and high quality administrative and customer services that underpin delivery of the Institutes research strategy.

This appointment requires a good Honours degree in a relevant discipline or substantial administrative experience in a comparative position, a background of working at a senior level within large complex organisations eg Universities or NHS with particular experience of financial and personnel management will be a distinct advantage.
