The Faculty of Health and Life Sciences is passionate about the principles and applications of science and technology in all its forms and strives to be excellent in research, teaching, and innovation.

Working in the Department of Applied Sciences, in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, you will provide expertise in the area of polymer chemistry, to further enhance research, teaching, and entrepreneurial activities. This will include undertaking research to produce quality academic outputs; designing, developing, and delivering high quality teaching provision; and participating in external activity to generate income and promote the subject area.

Polymer chemistry is an established aspect of the Department’s research and teaching portfolio, and is an essential part of our RSC accredited BSc and MChem programmes. The department has recently refurbished synthetic and analytical chemistry research laboratories, and teaching facilities. It also possesses its own high performance computing cluster for modelling and simulation.

The Department has particular strengths in analytical and synthetic chemistry, as well as interdisciplinary research with biology, engineering, art and design, with a record of success in industrially focused research co-funded by InnovateUK/RCUK. Northumbria’s chemistry academics were a significant part of the University’s success in the recent REF exercise, placing Northumbria in the top 50 UK universities for research power.

The successful candidate must hold a first degree in chemistry and be qualified to PhD level in polymer chemistry. They should have specific subject expertise in any aspect of polymer chemistry, with specialist knowledge gained through research activity, professional practice, or consultancy. They must be able to demonstrate the ability to deliver high quality research-led teaching, possess a publication profile suitable for REF eligibility, and show a track record of income generation from a range of funders.
