At the Hartree Centre, we utilise the UK’s premier supercomputing environment, researchers and software developers, to provide an outcome based collaborative R&D service to help UK Industry and Academia develop better products, services, processes and software.

About the Role

The Hartree Centre is looking for a talented individual to provide software application support.

Specific responsibilities to include: 

  • Act as an expert source of information, support and advice to users of Hartree Centre services
  • Engage with customers and researchers and increase their awareness of the software techniques and capabilities available at the Hartree Centre
  • Conduct installation, configuration and upgrades of specialist scientific software applications in High Performance Computing (HPC), data analytics and cognitive computing environments on Linux systems
  • Maintenance and development of environment modules, containers and other appropriate software management tools
  • Maintenance and development of user documentation and training materials
  • Provision of L2 support to the Hartree Centre service desk, diagnosing and resolving customer issues to meet SLA commitments
  • Evaluation, development and maintenance of cross-platform software management or secondary package management systems
  • Establishment of a set of diagnostic benchmarks that can be routinely used to measure system performance and identify issues
  • Work with Hartree Centre customers on specific projects to create bespoke software environments.

About You

You will need to have excellent communication skills to ensure that you can communicate effectively with all stakeholders, from team members, to users of Hartree Centre services. 

You will have extensive analytical and problem-solving capability, excellent written and verbal communications skills and the ability to show sound judgment.

You must be able to act on your own initiative to ensure the provision of an excellent service to Hartree Centre customers.

You must be able to demonstrate extensive experience in compiling, installing and configuring a range of scientific software.  This will require an in depth knowledge of various compilers (for instance GCC, Intel, XL, PG), cross-compilation, the GNU build system, Cmake and Python.

You will have a degree in a scientific or technical subject or demonstrate equivalent relevant experience.

There is a requirement for occasional travel within the UK. International travel may be required in exceptional circumstances.
