The School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research (SSPSSR) at Kent is one of the leading research centres for social science in the UK and Europe.

A multi-disciplinary department recognised worldwide, SSPSSR is ranked 2nd for research power, 3rd for research intensity and 5th for both research impact and research quality (GPA) by the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF).

The School supports a thriving postgraduate community of over 200 students and offers a diverse range of professional development opportunities. Current postgraduate students are conducting research into a wide range of topics including comparative social welfare; the third sector and philanthropy; sociological and cultural theory; religion; violence; new media and technology; work and employment; environmental movements; penal policy; intoxication and drug policy; youth transitions; ethnicity and identity. SSPSSR offers an unrivalled European, research-rich context in which to study for a PhD in the social sciences.

We are offering fully funded PhD scholarships and invite applications in the subject areas of:

Successful candidates will have obtained a 1st or good 2.1 undergraduate degree, and ordinarily an MA or MSc at Merit or Distinction. Those awarded the scholarships at our School will also hold Graduate Teaching Assistantships that involve a limited amount of teaching, gaining experience vital for a future career in education and academia.
