Seeking Consultant Analyst and Writer, In Climate and Energy Finance and Economics

Freelance analyst and writer required to assist a small research consultancy operating in the energy sector, focusing on a low-carbon transition in power generation. The candidate will help meet tight deadlines for research and data gathering, for the purpose of report and blog writing. For the right candidate, this would graduate to a full-time position, helping grow and diversify the firm’s activities.

Strong writing and research skills are essential, and a strong interest in the energy sector, and in a low-carbon transition in particular. An economics background is desirable.


  • Research topics which may include:
    • Power market reform;
    • Global trends in energy policy with a focus on Europe;
    • Financing of low-carbon energy infrastructure;
    • Comparative valuation of power generation assets, e.g. gas vs coal;
    • The economics of renewable energy;
  • Write report and short commentary blogs on these and other topical energy market issues;
  • Track developments in energy policy, investments and prices, for the purpose of data gathering.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Skills
    • Exceptional writing skills, for the structuring and writing of reports against tight deadlines;
    • Rapid review and assimilation of academic, market and policy literature;
    • Retrieval and manipulation of raw data, especially in desk-top research, for the development of datasets, and the generation of tables and charts;
    • Basic modelling, e.g. use of Excel, Access;
    • Languages preferred, in addition to fluency in English, possibly including German and/ or Spanish.
  • Knowledge
    • Strong understanding of the energy sector, and power markets in particular;
    • Familiarity with global and regional trends in energy, including a low-carbon transition;
    • Basic grasp of climate change science;

Background/ education:

  • Considerable experience-plus studying or working in the energy sector, e.g. in research and analysis at a bank, corporate or consultancy, in specialised journalism, or in PhD research;
  • Strong energy and/ or economics undergraduate degree preferred;
  • Post-graduate energy and/ or economics qualification preferred.

Location: Flexible in Europe; home-working
