Lecturer/Associate Professor in Chinese Society and Politics

Xi'an Jiaotong - Liverpool University - Department of China Studies

Applications are invited for a position in the Department of China Studies at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University.

The successful applicant will have a PhD in relevant fields and be able to demonstrate appropriate professional experience. Applicants should have good teaching experience and evidence of the ability to produce high quality research publications. Applicants are expected to have good language skills in both English and Chinese, and be able to teach in English, the language of instruction at the university. The successful appointee will be expected to teach; to undertake research in their area of specialisation on both individual and group projects, and to be actively engaged in the publication of the results; and to participate in the administration and development of the department of China Studies.

The Department’s focus is on China, its history and culture, society and politics, economy and business development. While Chinese language is an essential part of its teaching and learning programs, these are delivered by the university’s Language Centre. The Department offers both a BA and an MA in China Studies, as well as a one-year Diploma in China Studies for visiting international students.

The Department seeks to appoint a lecturer/associate professor in Chinese Society and Politics. The position is available from July 2018, with teaching to start at the beginning of September 2018. The successful appointee will each teach two of the following four undergraduate modules:

  • Twentieth Century China - a 2ndLevel (Year 1 of the University of Liverpool degree) module;
  • Social Stratification in China- a 3rd level (Year 2) module;
  • West China- a 4th Level (Year 3) module; or
  • Social Policy in China- a 4th Level (Year 3) module.

And the successful appointee may be involved in teaching seminars in the postgraduate coursework programme related to Chinese society and welfare development.

XJTLU was the first university in China to offer both UK (University of Liverpool) and Chinese (Ministry of Education) accredited undergraduate degrees. The University has over 10,000 students and a further 2,500 studying at the University of Liverpool on a “2+2” articulation route. The language of instruction in Years 2 to 4 is English. The salary range for the Lecturer positions (equivalent to Assistant Professor in the US system) is 23,850 – 29,222 RMB/month, and for Associate Professor is 30,000-40,000 RMB/month. In addition, members of academic staff are entitled to accommodation and travel allowances, medical insurance, and relocation expenses.
