Associate Professorship (or Professorship) of American Literature

Grade 30S: Combined University and College salary in the range £46,336 - £62,219 p.a.

Applications are invited for the post of Associate Professor (or Professor) of American Literature to be held in the Faculty of English from 1 October 2018 (or as soon as possible thereafter). The appointment will be made in association with a tutorial fellowship at Oriel College.

The appointee will join a lively and intellectually stimulating community. Oxford is the largest university in the UK and has one of the largest English departments in the world, which has been ranked top in its subject in the QS University Rankings for four of the last five years. The appointee will be a member of the College, Faculty, and University communities, taking an active role in the running of all three.

The appointee will be expected to engage in advanced study and academic research at an internationally competitive level in 20th- and 21 century American literature (American literature encompasses the full range of literature from what is now the United States, including Anglo- and European American, African American, Asian American, Native American, Arab American and Latinx/Chicanx literature) and to enthuse and inspire students at both undergraduate and graduate level through tutorials, classes, lectures, and supervision. The post holder will be required to undertake undergraduate teaching for the College in literature in English from 1830 to the present day.

The successful candidate will have a doctorate in a relevant field (or a completed doctoral dissertation submitted for examination by the closing date) and evidence of distinguished research and/or research potential in the area of 20th- and 21 century American literature. A publication record appropriate to the appointee’s career stage, and which will enhance the profile of the English Faculty in this area, is required, as is evidence of excellence in teaching American literature and literature in English from 1830 to the present day.

Additional benefits include a College housing allowance (currently £8,088 p.a.). An additional payment of £2,700 p.a. would be payable upon award of the title of Professor.
