An opportunity has arisen to join the team of The Confucius Institute, now classed as a Model CI, the SCI was set up in 2007 in partnership with the Confucius Institute headquarters, Beijing Language and Culture University and Nanjing University. It offers a programme of activities and courses designed to give staff, students and the local community an insight into Chinese language and culture. Since 2014, it has extended its provision of courses and public events in Chinese language and culture to include a focus on the needs of business, industry, low-carbon events and healthcare.

The Institute is the focus of China-related activities, including:

  • Research into learning Chinese as a foreign language;
  • Chinese language training for students, teachers, community and business;
  • Chinese language testing;
  • Seminars on Chinese culture and society;
  • Chinese film showings.

You will play a key role in maintaining our reputation for being the bridge of understanding, a bridge linking cooperation between the UK and China.

In this varied and dynamic role, you will be responsible for reception and administrative support to our department. Previous relevant administration experience is essential, as is experience of using email, databases, word processing and spreadsheets. The post holder will also promote and support a number of varied events throughout the year and ensure that our webpages and social media presence are maintained in an engaging manner in both English and Mandarin languages. We are therefore seeking candidates who are fluent in both English and Mandarin and are educated to GCSE standard (or have equivalent experience) with excellent levels of numeracy and literacy and have excellent customer service skills. In addition, the postholder will be responsible for administering the financial administration of the Institute.
