Animal Faculty Manager

Based within the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, this is a pivotal role with key accountability for the successful leadership and management of the Vernon Jensen Unit. Reporting to the Director of Faculty Operations, your primary responsibility will be the effective management of all animal unit facilities and the respective budgets, administration, equipment and security. With a team of 14 direct reports, you will be expected to embody best practice principles, leading your team in a manner that inspires and motivates, ensuring high standards of animal welfare and husbandry while supporting a diverse programme of research and teaching.

Ideal applicants will be tertiary qualified preferably with a relevant science or animal qualification and able to demonstrate proven experience within a leadership role. Preference will be given to candidates who can exercise their significant knowledge and management expertise in the areas of operations, budgets and the ability to effectively build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholder groups, with a focus on academic staff, research staff and post graduate students. This role will suit those who have worked in the tertiary education sector with proven experience leading animal facility operations within an often demanding, varied and challenging environment. A thorough understanding of the Animal Welfare Act and the Animal Ethics Code of Conduct will be required.

Candidates will bring strong team leadership, financial and operations management skills alongside demonstrated experience in building effective working relationships. There is also the requirement to manage and adhere to the health & safety and wellbeing policies guidelines and procedures of the University of Auckland.
