One or more Professor(s) with Special Responsibilities (MSO) in ‘Global Studies’

Roskilde University – Department of Social Science and Business

The Department of Social Science and Business (ISE), Roskilde University, invites applications for one or more fixed-term position(s) as professor(s) with special responsibilities in Global Studies. The position(s) is available from April 1, 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

By opening one or more professorship(s) with special responsibilities ISE looks to develop its research and teaching in Global Studies further. Focus may be on global political sociology, global political economy and/or global politics.

Applicants should match the following profile:

  • Consolidated research profile within Global Studies with a particular focus on global political sociology, global political economy and/or global politics preferably with a focus on the Global South.
  • Extensive track-record of securing external funding of research projects.
  • Consolidated teaching experience within the field of Global Studies.
  • Substantial experience in project-based teaching and teaching in an interdisciplinary environment.

The position(s) will be linked to one of the following research groups ‘Globalisation and Europeanisation’, ‘Global Political Sociology’, or’ International Development’. See Research Strategy 2017-2020 here.

Responsibilities and tasks
The professor (MSO)’s responsibilities relate to the development of ‘Global Studies’ as a key research and teaching area in the department. The professor (MSO)’s duties will primarily include research (including publication/academic dissemination duties) and research-based teaching and supervision (with associated examination duties) primarily in the following teaching programmes: ‘Global Studies’, ‘International Studies’, and the social science bachelor programs. In addition, the position includes a duty to actively share knowledge with society at large.

Furthermore, the Professor (MSO) is expected to put in a considerable effort in fundraising and in managing large research projects in the area of the professorship as well as provide guidance and supervision of PhD students and assistant professors as well as take active part in academic assessments, and fulfil other tasks requested by the Department.

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Conduct research and engage in research cooperation within the field of ‘Global Studies’ meeting high international standards,
  • Develop and show academic leadership by developing and managing core educational and research related tasks,
  • Actively contribute to the development of the research profile of the Department,
  • Actively engage in external fundraising to increase funds for PhDs, post docs etc. at the Department,
  • Actively contribute to the administrative responsibilities of the Department and to RUC-wide tasks,
  • Actively participate in the Department’s communication with the broader public,
  • Take responsibility for the long-term well-being of the Department, and
  • Promote RUC’s academic reputation.

Qualifications
Applicants must hold a PhD degree or equivalent in an appropriate field. Qualifications within the following scientific areas are required:

  • Documented teaching qualifications or other material for the evaluation of your pedagogical level.
  • Documented research production at an international level, including high level of publications in the field’s internationally most recognized journals and/or publishing houses.

It is a requirement that the applicant provides evidence of a steady rate of publications, a progression in publications over time, as well as current research activity in the form of recent publications at high international level. Experience with research leadership, editorial experience, citations, international networks and other research merits will be taken into account.

You are also required to be enterprising and to possess good interpersonal skills and to be a visible, active participant in the Department’s daily activities, in addition to being willing to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration across the department.

Successful candidates who do not speak Danish (or possibly Swedish or Norwegian) will be requested to acquire the necessary skills in Danish within the first two years of service, so as to ensure that they can participate satisfactorily in teaching activities as well as in academic and administrative activities at the University. At the time of appointment, successful candidates must master English for academic purposes. Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to;

  • Research topic (including the fit between the Global Studies programme and the applicant’s research profile),
  • An original academic production at a high international level, which documents that the applicant has contributed to developing the academic discipline of Global Studies,
  • The fit between the description of the suggested responsibility (see application below) and ISE’s research strategy,
  • A strong track-record in the ability to attract external fundraising and manage large externally funded research projects,
  • A track record in research leadership and PhD supervision,
  • Strong teaching qualifications, considerable experience with project-based learning, and substantial interdisciplinary teaching experience,
  • Experience in education development and management

Terms of employment
The employment is 37 hours per week and you will refer to Head of Department, Peter KragelundThe position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The position is covered by the Protocol on Job Structure.

Commencing salary will be for professor (MSO) minimum DKK 541.312 per year (1st April 2017 level) plus pension contribution (17,1 %).

The position is offered as a 5-year Professorship with Special Responsibilities, with the possibility of extension for up to 3 years. On expiry of the professorship period, the appointee is offered employment and remuneration as Associate Professor.
