The Role

Kingston University has been delivering successful law programmes for 50 years.  Following a recent review, Law has moved into the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, forming a School of Law, Social and Behavioural Sciences.  The Department is currently reviewing its portfolio of programmes to ensure that we provide relevant, challenging and exciting programmes to our diverse student population.

The person appointed will play a key role in the delivery of core undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and will contribute fully to student support and tutoring activities.  The successful applicant will also take up the role of Head of Department for 3 years in the first instance.  You will engage in the ongoing development of the research profile of the Department by maintaining a personal programme of research and scholarship and will be supported with opportunities for personal and professional development.

The Person

The person appointed will make a significant contribution to the strategic development of the Department of Law as well as being directly engaged with its research and lecturing activities.  They should have strong leadership qualities and skills.

Applicants will have:

  • a PhD or equivalent
  • experience of academic management
  • leadership skills and aptitude
  • experience of teaching, ideally including course leadership in the HE sector at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • evidence of an established or developing research profile in terms of outputs, grant applications and awards

The position is open to candidates across the discipline.  We have a particular interest, in staff who can teach in one or more of the following areas of Law; Company, International Trade, Family, Contract, Intellectual Property and Tort.

The Faculty

The Department of Law is one of the five Departments (Economics, Criminology and Sociology, Law, Politics and Psychology) comprising the School of Law, Social and Behavioural Sciences. The School has a very active research culture, with a strong track record of attracting research funding; it has been awarded over £1.5 million in external funding over the last 18 months. The School currently hosts around 75 PhD students, 16 in Law. Each department comprises a number of sub-disciplinary research groups;  in Law these include the Group for Employment Law and Policy, the Integrity Research Group and the Globalisation and Law Group.

The department has a thriving research culture, placing the study of law within a wider social, economic and political context. Its staff lead research across a diverse range of areas including employment law, criminal justice, human rights, financial regulation and the digital economy. Its outlook is truly global with its research centres linked to a network of international research partnerships. It has a track record of excellent research, with an emphasis on producing impact through collaboration with stakeholders locally and nationally. It has a good record of attracting grants for Knowledge Transfer Partnerships including a recent partnership grant with Equas Limited and Innovate UK Technology Strategy Board.

Its experts work with and advise governments, regulatory bodies and businesses through collaborations and consultancy work. Recent examples involve advice to the senior UK judiciary on case management and to the Jamaican Government on money laundering.

The department hosts regular national and international conferences including a recent symposium on Corruption. It also has scholarly exchanges with a number of countries arranged through its research groups.
