Nesta is looking to recruit someone with excellent quantitative research and programming skills and proven expertise in data science techniques to join us as a Quantitative Research Fellow. Your focus will be on developing our ambitious programme of research which delivers data-driven insights into the creative economy.

The work is innovative and this role will suit someone who is entrepreneurial and combines academic rigour with a willingness to ‘get their hands dirty’ with real-world data to answer difficult but important questions. 

The creative economy is a wide-ranging part of the economy, spanning high-tech digital sectors, content industries like film, music and video games, creative services like design and advertising, and the arts and culture. This is an area where Nesta has built up a global reputation for original and influential research. The Quantitative Research Fellow will work with the Executive Director, Creative Economy and Data Analytics and a small team of data scientists and economists to take our research to the next level.

In 2017, Nesta was awarded Independent Research Organisation (IRO) status, conferring on it equal research funding status to UK universities from UK Research Councils.

About the role

Measuring and analysing the creative economy presents significant challenges because it often involves tracking new phenomena – new businesses, new industries, new technologies, new jobs – that are often difficult to define, and which are poorly captured in existing data sources. Increasingly, Nesta has been making use of new data sources and methods to tackle this challenge, such as web data and social media data, social network analysis, machine learning methods and data visualisation. Recent projects include an analysis of online job ads data to understand the demand for creative skills, an interactive map of museums in England, and a groundbreaking analysis of gender balance in the British film industry based on a complete database of cast and crew for British films secured from the British Film Institute. The team are now looking for an additional Quantitative Research Fellow to explore new opportunities to innovate in this area, including through the application of data science techniques.

Intellectually curious, pragmatic and output-focused, you will have excellent quantitative research and programming skills. We are particularly interested in candidates with proven expertise in data science techniques as well as statistics, who can demonstrate a strong aptitude for research which has practical and policy implications. You’ll also be an excellent team player who can work flexibly to manage competing and changing priorities.

1st Interviews will be held on Tuesday 12 December. 2nd Interviews will be held on Monday 18 December.
