Software Engineer

We are seeking a Software Engineer to join the Modernising Medical Microbiology research group lead by Professor Derrick Crook. The Department is hosting an ambitious programme of research and development in clinical research informatics and whole genome sequencing. The Programme is a collaboration between the Oxford Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) and the University’s Department of Computer Science (DCS), and is funded by the National Institute for Health Research. The aim of the programme is to provide a state-of-the-art informatics infrastructure for translational research and service improvement.

As our Software Engineer you will focus on the delivery of software to provide scalable processing pipelines. These will take both short and long read genome sequencing data as an input and produce outputs that allow characterisation of individual bacteria (antimicrobial resistance profiling for example) and comparison of multiple bacteria to determine genetic relatedness and the putative basis for phenotypic differences. The key sequencing platform will be the Oxford Nanopore Technologies sequencing technology. New software workflows will need to be developed to process, analyse, and report sequence data. There will be opportunities to develop novel algorithms and address big data problems, particularly in relation to sharing and comparing data between multiple centres.

To be successful it is essential that you hold an undergraduate degree in a relevant scientific discipline, such as computing, in addition to an interest in new and novel computing technologies and their application to extremely challenging problems. It would also be desirable for applicants to have experience in software pipeline development.

The post is full-time and fixed-term for up to 2 years initially.
