Job Description
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Barcelona (Spain), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton near Cambridge (UK) and Rome (Italy).

Applications are invited for a Senior Technical Officer position at the Structural Biology Unit of the EMBL in Hamburg, Germany. The position is within the biological SAXS group, which runs a high brilliance user-oriented synchrotron radiation P12 beamline on the storage ring PETRA-3. This beamline is part of the integrated EMBL facility at PETRA-3, which includes two macromolecular crystallography (MX) beamlines and a biological sample preparation and characterization (SPC) facility. The successful candidate will be involved in the development of the beamline-specific sample environments facilitating hybrid approaches to utilize SAXS together with other structural, biophysical and biochemical techniques. The post holder is also expected to perform support of the external P12 users and carry out collaborative projects at the SAXS beamline. There will be opportunities to link related research activities with the operation at the beamline; specifically encouraged are enhancements in sample quality control, on-line purification and biophysical characterization.

Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should have:

  • A PhD and ideally 3 years of postdoctoral experience in a relevant field with significant scientific accomplishments
  • Very good knowledge of biophysical, biochemical and structural methods
  • Demonstrated expertise in structure analysis of biological macromolecules using small-angle X-ray scattering
  • Work experience at service facilities, high level of service-oriented attitude
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience of collaborative working relationships with customers and stakeholders in an international environment
  • Ability to work independently but also as a part of a team
  • Full command of English (written as well as spoken), additional knowledge German would be an asset
