Main Purpose of the Post

The Wales Institute for Social and Economic Research, Data &Methods (WISERD) has been awarded £7m of funding from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to undertake a five year programme of policy relevant research addressing Civil Society. WISERD is led from Cardiff University and involves universities in Wales and the rest of the UK. The primary duty of this post will be to support economists in Swansea University undertaking research in the area of wellbeing and the inter-relationship between aspects of civil society and the economy in a time of austerity. Research questions include: how has the spatial diversity of subjective measures of wellbeing in the UK evolved overtime? To what extent do different domains contribute to an overall measure of life satisfaction or wellbeing? What part is played by ‘people’ and ‘places’ in explaining spatial variation? How do measures of social cohesion and civil society mitigate the effects of personal circumstances? To what extent are social enterprises increasing and what are their characteristics? What determines the survival of social enterprises? What is the scale of the contribution of social enterprises to employment and productivity (growth)? What is the relationship between redistribution and welfare provision and religion? How does religion influence wellbeing?
