Assistant Professor in World Literatures in English (Grade 7 or 8)

The role:
Joining one of the UK’s leading English departments, you can expect a varied and interesting role, allowing you to utilise your extensive research and teaching capabilities.  You will pursue your own original research areas in any aspect of English in a global context, including Indian, African and Caribbean Literature, with further relevant interests in colonial history and theory.  Teaching undergraduate and Masters students, your imaginative adaptations of current programmes will see you working on lectures, seminars and tutorials, and you will supervise dissertations and develop modules that will complement our existing strengths.  You will attract and supervise PhD students, and be proactive in applying for funding and furthering the impact of our research outputs. 

You’ll need:

  • To have a solid research background in any area of World Literatures in English and English Literacy Studies.
  • A good first degree, with a PhD in English or a related subject.
  • Experience of producing world-class research, supported by an ongoing research plan and knowledge of developing successful research project proposals.
  • Excellent teaching skills, with the creativity to tailor and deliver interesting seminars and lectures with the ability to attain fellowship of the HEA.
  • The ability to supervise PhD candidates, plus lead research groups and mentor early career researchers.
  • Clear ideas and experience of your research having an impact beyond your institution.
  • Solid communication skills with the willingness to work collaboratively with other departments and disciplines.
  • Enthusiasm for providing high calibre education to students in groups of varying sizes, with the potential to shape teaching programmes.
