Two Post-Doctoral Positions in Optics for Storage Systems

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral research position based in Microsoft Research Cambridge working on future optical cloud storage systems. Microsoft Research is investing heavily in exploring disruptive optical technologies for the cloud. The successful applicant will work in a highly inter-disciplinary team focussed mainly on creating disruptive technologies for the cloud and will have the opportunity to achieve significant impact. The team has a track record of taking cutting edge research and transferring it into the company, while concurrently producing high impact publications.

We have two post-doctoral roles open to work on new optical storage system technologies, who will work closely together and with the larger optical storage team. The first year will be spent understanding the state-of-the-art, looking to create solutions to make the technology feasible, and verifying the core assumptions using simulation and practical experiments where appropriate.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in optics or optical systems, with ideally an interest in applying this to storage systems.  Applicants should hold a PhD or have equivalent experience.  The position is available immediately, but some flexibility on this may be possible.


  • PhD in Optics, Electrical Engineering or Physics
  • Track record of executing on an innovative research agenda
  • Experience in optical hardware, optical design and analytical tools
  • Experience in optical systems design and modelling
  • Ability and desire to work in cross-disciplinary teams
  • Good collaboration skills
