UCL now seeks an exceptional Dean of the Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences.

One of 11 Faculties within UCL, the Faculty of Social & Historical Sciences (SHS) represents areas of knowledge where humanities and science meet. Offering a diverse area of study, departments within SHS are ranked within the top 20 in the world.  The interests and methods of the eight component departments (Anthropology, Archaeology, Economics, Geography, History, History of Art, Institute of the Americas, Political Science) offer excellent opportunities for innovative and collaborative research.  Each of the departments has major research strengths in its own discipline and also play a major role in UCL’s growing network of interdisciplinary research centres.  

The Opportunity

  • The Dean will be responsible for leading this ambitious and innovative Faculty through the next phase of its development.
  • As a member of the Provost’s Senior Management Team, you will be responsible for the development of the long term strategic vision for the Faculty that will inspire and enthuse a diverse range of colleagues and partners within the UK and internationally while contributing to the delivery of UCL 2034, the University’s 20 year strategy.
  • Building on the Faculty’s existing reputation for academic excellence, you will promote a spirit of collegial and collaborative working which extends across the Faculty, the University and to a rich network of relationships with strategic partners.
  • The Faculty will have a strong presence on UCL’s new campus at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the first phase of which will be delivered in 2020, and you will play a leading role in developing the Faculty’s teaching, research and impact agenda in the context of this exciting development.

  • You will have outstanding interpersonal and influencing skills as well as demonstrating highly adept leadership skills gained in complex, research led organisations

  • You will demonstrate passion and intellectual curiosity that inspires colleagues across the spectrum of disciplines to deliver a world-leading teaching, research and impact agenda and engage in groundbreaking new discussions, research and learning.
