JOB ROLE:

The purpose of this role is to coordinate the academic aspect of student interventions, which take place in line with the College’s Progression Management strategy.  This involves close collaboration, coordination and communication with colleagues in the Academic team (tutors and Academic Advisers), Progression Support, Student Support. Our student interventions are part of USIC strategy to maximise the delivery of contractually required progression rates to the University, as well as positive outcomes for students. The post holder will be directly responsible to the Assistant Director for Curriculum and Progression for effective implementation of the progression management processes but is also responsible for contributing collaboratively to the Progression Support Team in both their day-to-day activity but also for development and delivery of the progression management information. 

Central to this role is the effective coordination of efforts by a number of individuals, in order to support students who are at risk of not progressing to the University. This will involve providing academic guidance and action planning during joint meetings between the Student Outcomes Leader and Progression Support Team, Progression Support/Student Support and the student.  It will also involve systematic follow-up after the meeting from the Academic Advisor, to track a students’ continued performance following interventions. They will be responsible for tracking and monitoring follow-up meetings, as well as the students’ academic progress. The post holder will be driven towards the continuous enhancement of personalised academic guidance with regard to Progression Management. Therefore, strong communication and coordination of the activities of multiple staff members and a variety of information is core to the role.

The post holder will connect the operational needs of our Progression Support Team and the Academic team (tutors and Academic Advisers) to successfully support student progression including intervention. They will also work in close with the Module Coordinator for the Academic Success module. The post holder will be responsible for leading a team of Academic Advisors to deliver excellence in advice and coaching. They will be expected to track and monitor the one-to-one tutorial delivery to ensure that we achieve consistency and high levels of attendance. This post is vital in bringing all of these different strands together, to best support the student and achieves successful outcomes.

The post holder will be directly responsible for liaising with Student Support to possess information regarding student attendance or welfare intervention, where this may directly require additional progression support.

The post holder will also have contact teaching of up to 16 hours per week, in addition to their other duties.

QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING

  • A Bachelor degree in the relevant subject area. Candidates with further qualifications in the subject area will be welcome and a Masters qualification is normally essential for teaching on the Pre-masters programmes.

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS

  • Experience of teaching in UK higher or further education and preferably a teaching qualification and experience of working with international students
  • Experience of modeling good practice in group tutorial, as well as one-to-one tutorials. 
  • Experience, and a positive track record, of working with staff teams to maximise progression rates to the University
  • Experience of coordinating activities during a period of change to achieve enhancement
  • Experience of evaluating staff performance and identifying and delivering development needs
  • Experience planning and delivering change or continuous improvement, which achieved a positive impact on student outcomes.
  • Experience of providing feedback to another person about their performance, as well as providing coaching.
  • Experience of successfully coordinating internal communication, which includes disseminating complex messages or changes to processes.
  • Experience of working with international students and an undertaking of welfare, well-being and cultural issues which may arise
  • Experience of developing and delivering staff training to ensure that we deliver a standardised student experience

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS

  • Enthusiasm for development of academic guidance and enhancement of the quality of monitoring and support received by students for personal development and to improve their opportunities for progression
  • Ability to evaluate and analyse data for annual monitoring and review purposes.
  • Ability to reflect and respond to student feedback
  • Ability to coordinate activities set deadlines and take responsibility for overseeing their successful completion to meet challenging deadlines.
  • Competence in teaching and administrative IT skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, e-mail, VLE etc.)
