Professor of Medicine for the Elderly

University of Central Lancashire - School of Medicine

Interview Date: 31st January 2018

Set in the incredibly beautiful Lake District region, the West Cumbria Medical Education Centre (WCMEC) offers a heady combination of good working hours and a life-work balance that’s unmatched by other medical employers. But it’s not just the lifestyle that makes us so appealing – it’s the incredibly supportive environment in which the sharpest minds in medicine have come together to teach, conduct research and maintain an active role in practising medicine. This unusual combination is the result of a joint venture between The North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust (NCUH) and the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) and has produced a forward thinking and innovative partnership within which to work.

We have recently recruited a number of junior and senior staff, and believe we offer something unique to our employees. With the shared aim of passing on knowledge and furthering advancement in medicine and medical education, we believe we’re providing a crucial service to future generations.

In this enticing role, you will therefore be responsible for undertaking research, and assisting in the further development of the research infrastructure at WCMEC. You will contribute to diversifying our portfolio of activity, conducting your own high-quality research and providing solid mentorship to junior members of staff. Assisting with the overall academic leadership of the school, you will also teach UCLan students and junior clinical colleagues. A key part of your role will also be your work as an Honorary Consultant Physician in Medicine for the Elderly at West Cumberland Hospital. Contributing to clinical service provision in the area of Care of the Elderly, you will also take part in the out-of-hours on-call rota.

To undertake this unique role, you will need to be MRCP (UK) and GMC registered with a licence to practise. On a medical specialist register in Elderly Care Medicine at consultant level, you will be able to undertake GIL on call and take on full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of your patients. Substantial academic experience, including the transfer of knowledge and an excellent track record of building and sustaining internal and external relationships are also essential requirements for this position.

You will have a strong track record in research and in supervision of junior researchers. With amazing leadership and people development skills, you will have the passion needed to mentor and develop someone starting out in their career. Credible and well respected in your field, you will be a crucial part of our future success.
