PhD Studentship: Future Machining Technologies

Machining is one of the most dominant manufacturing process used for manufacturing precision functional parts across various industries. However, due to the mechanical nature of the process, its application is limited when dealing with advanced materials with enhanced mechanical properties such as alloys and composites used in aerospace industry.

The Advanced Machining Processes and Systems research team is leading research in innovative manufacturing processes such as cryogenic machining and hybrid manufacturing technologies combining the strengths of additive and subtractive processes.

This project will explore the potential of data collection and machine learning for additive and subtractive processes for manufacturing parts from special alloys and involves developing new concepts of cutting tools, designing new processes, sensoring, concurrent simulation, machining trials, workpiece surface quality analysis (e.g. metallurgy, integrity, residual stresses), followed by investigations on innovative methods to evaluate the machinability of advanced materials.

The successful candidate will receive appropriate training on using various equipment and technologies for this project such as CNC machine tools, piezoelectric material development, metal additive manufacturing, Scanning Electron Microscopy, etc. and will benefit from interactions with various industrial partners.

A Home/EU award will provide full tuition fees, an annual Training Support Fee of £1,000, and a tax-free maintenance payment of £14,553 (2017-8 rate) for up to 3.5 years.

An Overseas award (3 years): Provides tuition fee, an annual Training Support Fee of £1,000, but no stipend.

The successful applicant will ideally have graduated (or be due to graduate) with an undergraduate Masters first class degree and/or MSc distinction (or overseas equivalent).
