Postdoctoral researcher, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Department Political Science, Maastricht University, 1.00 fte, 18 months

Applicants are invited for an 18 months postdoctoral position within the project “Democratic Representation across countries, context and time”. The project is funded by the NWO, awarded to the principal investigator, Dr. Christine Arnold.

Research project
The question of how governments can better connect with their citizens is a central concern for national and European policy-makers. A central tenet of representative democracy is that there is a reciprocal link between the provisions of public policies and the wishes of the citizens. Measuring the degree of responsiveness of political institutions to the demands of citizens is of vital importance because it helps to assess how representatives are successful in meeting the needs and expectations of citizens.

Job description
This is an exciting opportunity to join a research project on political representation. The post-doctoral researcher will conduct project-related research independently but also in co-operation with the project leader. The postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to expand on his or her own research, in consultation with the PI. The project tasks include a review of relevant literature from several scientific disciplines, data collection, and, first and foremost, quantitative empirical analysis of political responsiveness across policy areas, countries, levels of governance, and time. Additionally, the researcher is expected to lead, and contribute to academic publications, participate in team meetings, engage in presentations, be involved in the co-organization of workshops, and contribute to the development of grant applications.

Requirements
Applicants are expected to have completed their PhD either in political science, sociology or related disciplines, with methodological expertise in advanced quantitative methods, ideally demonstrated in the PhD thesis or publications. Proficiency in statistical data analyses with syntax-based software is a must. The successful candidate must be willing to travel, be open to working together with a team of scholars on collaborative projects, have excellent organizational abilities, and willingness and capacity for teamwork. Excellent communication and writing skills in English are a prerequisite, since the candidates will be engaging on an international level, collaborating with other team members in English and producing English-language publications. The postdoctoral researcher will be based in Maastricht.
