Head of Rare Books

UCL Special Collections has stewardship of the rare book, archive, and records material held by UCL and undertakes activities relating to those collections, including conservation, cataloguing, digitisation, and outreach. The Head of Rare Books is responsible for the acquisition, preservation, security, cataloguing, and exploitation of UCL’s centrally-held rare book collections. The post-holder is also responsible for the strategic development of academic research focused on all materials held across Special Collections.

The key requirements for this role are a recognised professional qualification in Librarianship or Information Studies; substantial experience of working in an academic or specialist library; and experience of cataloguing and life-cycle collection management of rare printed materials. The ideal candidate will also have a track record of scholarly publishing and experience of academic liaison work relating to rare books. They will be expected to have knowledge of the issues around the conservation and preservation of rare materials, including digitization.
