Research Assistant/Associate in Turbomachinery for Low-Carbon Power

University of Cambridge - Department of Engineering

A position exists for a Research Assistant/Associate to work on a project related to turbomachinery used for low-carbon power. The work involves the study of turbines used for the generation of power from renewable sources such as geothermal and solar-thermal sources and low-grade heat, using advance power cycles. Such cycles employ turbines operating with working fluids with strong real-gas effects such as refrigerants, long-chain hydrocarbons and CO2. The properties of these working fluids differ greatly from those which have traditionally been used within turbines (such as air within aero-engines/gas-turbines or water vapour within steam turbines) and can be made up of several components including mixtures of gases and liquids. There is very little known about the behaviour of these unconventional working fluids within turbines largely due to a lack of experimental data with which to test current theories.

The project is funded by the EPSRC. The aim of the research is to use experimental and computational methods to improve our understanding of the turbine thermofluid dynamics.

The key responsibilities and duties will be to aid the development and use of experimental and computational methods for the simulation of these flows; gather data on the turbine flows; and analyse the data to gain an understanding of how the choice of working fluid affects turbine performance.

The successful candidate must have obtained or be close to obtaining a PhD in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics or a related discipline.

Salary Ranges: Research Assistant £25,728  - £30,688; Research Associate: £31,604 - £38,833

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 1 December 2019 in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
