Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (East Asian History)

Manchester Metropolitan University - The Department of History, Politics, and Philosophy

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is a unique environment where Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences sit alongside the Manchester School of Art and the Manchester Fashion Institute. Student experience is at the heart of everything we do. We’re proud to offer state-of-the-art facilities, including digital and technical workshops, studios and gallery spaces designed to enhance learning and collaboration.

The Department of History, Politics, and Philosophy, situated within the Arts & Humanities Faculty, is one of the largest centres for historical research in the north of England. The History team is a highly professional and collegiate group who have been proactive in establishing innovative programmes of study to serve the needs of a 700+ undergraduate and postgraduate student population.

You will help in growing the History section of the Department, contributing to research development, mentoring junior staff, and providing high-quality teaching and supervision at undergraduate, masters and PhD levels. As a collegial department, we have a strong emphasis on mutual support, and organise around the principle of working together as a team to achieve the University’s strategic objectives (https://www2.mmu.ac.uk/about-us/our-strategy/).

You will have a background in modern East Asian History and a proven ability to teach undergraduates and post-graduates in this area effectively. Specialisms that link East Asian history to wider global themes around Empire, War and Society, Post-colonialism and/or Globalisation are especially welcome. You must also be a scholar with a recognised record of achievement in research as demonstrated by publications that are REF 2021 eligible and world-class in terms of originality, significance and rigour. You will have experience in applying for external grants and building external partnerships. As a collegial, team-player you'll have the ability to mentor and nurture the talents of others to the benefit of the Department and University as a whole.

We offer a stimulating environment for an exceptional scholar along with an excellent level of staff development and research support.

If you would like to join our people and share our ambition, we would love to hear from you.
