Research Associate Position in Synthetic Chemistry for Materials

An EPSRC funded Research Associate position in synthetic chemistry is available within the Chemistry Department at Imperial College, London. The successful candidate will join the group of Dr Matthew Fuchter (www.imperial.ac.uk/fuchtergroup), working in close collaboration with other research groups at Imperial College (Campbell, Nelson, Jelfs) and with the University of Cambridge.

The successful candidate will carry out novel research that builds upon our highly successful and exciting work on chiral organic materials (Nature Rev. Chem. 2017 DOI: 10.1038/s41570-017-0045, rdcu.be/th7m), and their ability to introduce unique functionality into organic electronic devices. These include circularly polarised organic light emitting diodes (Adv. Mater. 2013, DOI: 10.1002/adma.201204961; JACS. 2016 DOI: 10.1021/jacs.6b02463) and circularly polarised light detecting transistors (Nature Photon. 2013, DOI: 10.1038/nphoton.2013.176), where semiconducting properties can be controlled through chiral composition (ACS Nano 2017, DOI: 10.1021/acsnano.7b03540).

The planed research will focus on innovative strategies to synthesise novel chiral conjugated small molecules (for example helicenes), with the subsequent use of these molecules in chiral organic electronic devices. The synthetic challenges will include challenging aryl-aryl bond formation, novel coordination chemistry and demanding synthetic photochemistry. Full photophysical characterisation will be employed to study the synthesised molecules, followed by collaborative efforts to study them in the solid state/in devices.

Essential requirements include:

  • A PhD degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry
  • Experience and knowledge of transition metal catalysis and/or coordination chemistry, and photochemical synthesis methods
  • Advanced synthetic chemistry experience (organic, inorganic or organometallic)
  • A track record of publications appropriate to their career path
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to deal with a wide range of people

Desirable requirements include:

  • Further experience with molecular photophysical characterisation and chiroptical spectroscopy
  • Experience of materials synthesis in the area of light emitting materials
  • Experience of asymmetric synthesis

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £32,380 - £34,040 per annum.
