Research Associate

University of Sheffield - Physics and Astronomy

Contract Type: This is a fixed-term post for 36 months with a start date of 1 April 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

We are seeking a Research Associate with a background in astrophysics and AGN to work in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. This opportunity arises following the award of an STFC consolidated grant for Sheffield Astrophysics (ST/R000964/1).

The post will provide you with the opportunity to contribute to a world-leading programme of astrophysics research that involves the analysis and modelling of archival Spitzer, Herschel and HST data for complete samples of radio-loud and radio-quiet AGN.

Working under the direction of Professor Clive Tadhunter and Dr James Mullaney you will investigate the link between AGN and star formation activity in various samples of AGN for which deep Herschel photometry and Spitzer IRS spectra are available. The post presents an opportunity for you to work within a world-class research group with a strong track record in investigating the triggering of AGN and the impact that they have on the evolution of their host galaxies.

You will hold a PhD (or equivalent experience) in astrophysics and have experience in the analysis and interpretation of mid- to far-IR observations of galaxies and/or AGN.

We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
